Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
A very special place to stay on the Bere Peninsula, Devon. This refurbished traditional slate-hung 'one-up-one-down' former silver miner's cottage was built in the 1800s. Set in the Tamar Valley National Landscape and Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, with views of Cornwall and shared use of our 1/4 acre garden. Full self-catering or you can book breakfast and/or evening meals made by Martin, a professional chef. Self-contained annexe with own private entrance.

The space
A self-contained annexe to Vine House, where we live, Birland Cottage has its own private entrance with a keysafe.

Downstairs, the kitchen area comes with a two plate induction hob, microwave, fridge, sink, kettle (plus complimentary Fairtrade organic teas, coffee, fresh milk and sugar), toaster and all your cooking, crockery and cutlery essentials. There's also a sofa, dining table and chairs (doubling as an attractive workspace) plus local maps, magazines and guidebooks to consult. Our quarter acre garden is yours to explore, with great spots for sitting, drinking and eating al fresco. If you book to eat, you can have our own eggs and vegetables!

Upstairs, you'll find a double bed, chest of drawers, TV, books to read and a selection of board games, an en suite shower room and great views across the countryside to Cornwall.

Fast, free, full fibre Wifi is available throughout for your work or leisure needs.

If you're cycling or walking, we can store your bike or provide a space for muddy boots and wet gear. And if you’re staying for a week or more, you're most welcome to ask to use our washing machine.

Guest access
You will have the whole cottage to yourself and as guests are most welcome to share our quarter acre garden with us. This comprises two patios, lawns, flower borders, soft fruit patch, mini-orchard and new vegetable potager. There are plenty of places to sit, including the 'actual' vine house Garden Room. It's a great space for relaxation or indeed work (should you have to!), as it also has Wifi. Martin is always happy to give you a little 'garden tour'!

Other things to note
If you don't want to self-cater, we can provide breakfast and/or an evening meal, prepared in our 5* food hygiene rated kitchen. Everything is made from scratch and please just note, the kitchen is NOT allergen free.

A full breakfast is coffee/tea, orange juice, muesli, fruit compote, yoghurt, our own free range eggs, local dry cured bacon OR thyme fried mushrooms, sourdough toast and homemade jam & marmalade. £16 per person.

A light breakfast is coffee/tea, orange juice, fruit, croissants & preserves. £8.50 per person.

We also offer Devon cream teas (2-5 pm only) at £8.50 per person and can make you a packed lunch with homemade focaccia sandwiches, juice, fruit & crisps. £8.50 per person

A typical three course evening meal menu is courgette fritters with aioli, grilled free range chicken with salsa verde and fresh vegetables/salad from our garden, followed by panna cotta with a homemade fruit compote. A vegetarian main course alternative is also always available. £28 per person. We can also provide special menus for occasions such as Valentine's, birthdays and anniversaries, as well as different menus if you'd like to eat on multiple nights.

We serve you in the Cottage (or on the patio) and can take card or cash payments.

From autumn through to spring, as Birland Feasts, we hold a Secret Supper Club once a month on a Friday & Saturday in our dining kitchen, so we can't cook for you then - but you could book to attend! A light breakfast will always be available on the Sunday morning. The same applies when we're holding our Summer Feasts. This year (2026) we're at nearby Rumleigh Farm on 20 June and 11 July.

We also offer a Foodie Getway comprising a bespoke Let's Make Fresh Pasta! workshop*, dinner, stay and light breadkfast with lazy checkout. Please request all the details before booking.
*This is a mix of 'hands on' and demonstration to learn how to make and cook fresh pasta and pasta sauces.

Neighbourhood highlights

The beautiful Bere Peninsula lies between the Rivers Tavy and Tamar, off the main tourist route. There are endless public footpaths on the doorstep along which you can walk through fields and woods, spotting old mine chimneys and a scattering of farmsteads, enjoying the peace and quiet. On the banks of the rivers you can see shelducks, avocets, herons, curlews and if you're lucky, kingfishers - or even a European Roller!

It's a great place for cycling as well (bike storage available) and if you're visiting in the spring, the hedgerows are full of wonderful heritage Tamar Valley daffodils. We're also very excited to be just 10 minutes from the route of the new Tamara Coast to Coast Way.

Bere Alston, our village, has a post office with a bakery, pharmacy, butcher's shop, two small convenience stores (open 7 am till 10 pm), a pub, weekday garage/petrol station and a hairdressers, should you need one! There's also a pub in neighbouring Bere Ferrers, one of the nearby BBC series Beyond Paradise locations, along with Weir Quay Boatyard and other Tamar Valley spots.

The market town of Tavistock is a 15 minutes' drive away (or you can take the bus), offering a wide selection of independent shops, the famous Pannier Market, newly opened Tavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre and gateway to the splendour of Dartmoor National Park. The north and south coast Cornwall beaches are just 45 minutes' drive, it's only an hour to Exeter and there's a Tamar Valley Line train from our village down to Plymouth, 12 miles away, or up to Calstock, another Beyond Paradise location. Shipton Abbot is actually Looe, just 3/4 of an hour drive from here.
