Experience a simple, sustainable getaway in our unique hand-crafted eco cabin, nestled within a tranquil Permaculture forest garden on the Black Isle. Fully equipped for a short stay or an extended escape, the Green Tourism Gold rated cabin sleeps two, and is perfect for eco conscious travellers embracing slow, simple living. Whether exploring the Highlands or unwinding in nature, the cabin offers the perfect balance of comfort and simplicity where you can connect with the nature around you.

The space
Coll Cabin sleeps two in a comfortable double bed and features cooking facilities, a compact dining area, en suit bathroom and a bench that doubles as a small desk space. While off-grid for both electricity and water, the cabin offers plenty of eco-friendly comforts for a low-impact, yet comfortable stay. Water is supplied via a foot pump and can be heated on the gas hob or wood burner for cooking, washing and the bucket shower.

A wood burner, fuelled by firewood from our woodland, keeps things cosy, with organic cotton bedding and towels provided for added comfort. In the kitchen, you'll find a sink, double gas hob with grill and oven, plus a small 12v fridge/freezer and plenty of storage. A basic supply of essentials like oil, salt, tea, and coffee is provided.

The en suite bathroom includes a compost toilet, wash basin and a simple bucket shower. The shower is an old whisky barrel, simply heat some water on the stove, fill the bucket and use the 12v pump for a quick rinse. Complimentary homemade soap is provided to all guests.

The stable door opens to a small porch and deck with seating, offering views across the wood and fields. It’s perfect for forest bathing or spotting Red Kites overhead.

There’s no WiFi, but 4G networks are available for those who wish to stay connected—or simply enjoy a digital detox. The cabin has its own solar 12v battery system to power lights and USB charging.

Coll means Hazel in the Ogham tree alphabet, symbolising wisdom and creativity. The cabin is perfect for unwinding or focusing, with a small, inspiring desk overlooking the woodland—ideal for quiet work, reading, or reflection.

We designed and handcrafted Coll Cabin to be the kind of place we’d love to stay, and we hope you’ll love it too. Nestled in a private glade within our woodland garden, it offers a peaceful retreat (our other smaller Siskin Cabin is discretely tucked away in the same woodland).

Guest access
Coll Cabin is tucked into the woodland of our 2.5 acre permaculture homestead. You are welcome to explore the meandering paths and boardwalk, and a stile gives direct access to nearby walks to Monadh Mor (The Big Moor) and Redcastle on the Beauly Firth.

We provide free off-road parking and a trolley to help with luggage down to the cabin. Cyclists can use the secure bike shed, and local cycle paths make exploring the Black Isle easy.

We live on-site in the bungalow and are usually available for assistance, while fully respecting your privacy. Some areas around our home are private.

Our regenerative forest garden is a haven for plants, trees, and wildlife, and guests are encouraged to explore. Optional guided garden tours are available on a “pay what you feel” basis for those curious about permaculture, letting you explore more of the forest garden.

Other things to note
Your stay is at The Warren Forest Garden and Eco Cabins, a 2.5 acre permaculture learning garden on the Black Isle and part of a Scotland wide network demonstrating sustainable living. Coll Cabin reflects these values, built with low impact materials including locally milled larch, sheep’s wool insulation, and a green sedum roof. Rainwater harvesting, low VOC paints, organic textiles, and recycled and upcycled furnishings are used throughout.

Neighbourhood highlights

Siskin Cabin is surrounded by trees, farmland, and a small number of neighbouring homes. It’s a peaceful rural setting, ideal for guests who enjoy nature, walking, wildlife, and slower travel. There are no shops or cafés within walking distance, but a range of places to eat and explore are easily reached by bus, bike, or car. Our guidebook includes detailed recommendations, local tips, and maps to help you plan your stay.

As this is working countryside, you may occasionally hear farm or estate activity.

There are some nice local walks direct from the cabin, and a stile leads from the woodland onto a quiet road with easy access to:

• Redcastle and the Beauly Firth – gentle waterside walking with woodland, castle ruins, wide firth views, and picnic benches overlooking the water

Monadh Mor (The Big Moor) an atmospheric ancient bog forest rich in birdlife

The Black Isle is known for its gentle landscapes, coastal paths, and wildlife. Nearby Rosemarkie is perfect for a relaxed day out, with a sandy beach, coastal walks, the much loved Rosemarkie Beach Café, the Fairy Glen waterfall, Groam House Museum, Maureen’s ice cream van on sunny days, and the welcoming Plough Inn. For wildlife lovers, Chanonry Point is one of the best places in the UK to watch bottlenose dolphins from the shore. We recommend parking in Rosemarkie and walking along the beach to the lighthouse on the point.

Other easy highlights include Fortrose, with sea views, historic ruined cathedral and lunch or coffee at IV10 Café Bar or The Anderson, and Cromarty for galleries, shoreline walks, boat trips, and nearby birdwatching at Udale Bay.

The wider Highlands are also within easy reach, including Beauly, Strathpeffer, Reelig Glen, Abriachan Forest, Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Collden Moor, Clava Cairns, Loch Ness, and Glen Affric with its ancient pine forests and waterfalls.

We’re around 20 minutes from the North Coast 500, but we encourage guests to take time exploring the quieter charms of the Black Isle.

This is a wonderful base for exploring the Highlands by bus, bike, or car, before returning to birdsong, calm, and the simplicity of a truly rural retreat.
