Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
Charming well-appointed one bed self-contained accommodation in a restored 1840s cottage. Situated in an elevated position in the pretty Somerset village of Compton Martin near Wells, nestling in the beautiful Mendip countryside and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With far reaching views of Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes, you're also close to Wells, Bath, Bristol and Weston-super-Mare.

This delightful accommodation is just a stone's throw from the extremely popular village pub.

The space
Downstairs, there's a superbly equipped kitchen and living area with exposed beams and part-vaulted ceiling, original flagstone flooring, inglnook fireplace with log burner, exposed stone and wooden lintel - great for cosy nights in during the colder months.

You'll have the use of an American-style fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave, plus everything else you need to cook (pretty much) any meal of your choosing.

In addition to the Belfast kitchen sink, there's another sink with food waste disposal unit in the spacious pantry.

The bedroom and en-suite are accessed via a spiral staircase. There's a double bed and a vaulted ceiling with characterful exposed beams, windows at floor height and velux rooflights with views across the fields front and rear towards Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes.

The bathroom has a spacious shower with superb water pressure; we're told its amongst the best ever! There's a stained glass window feature built into the tiled shower wall and a shaving mirror with shaving point above the sink.

Guest access
The cottage is completely self-contained. It's attached to the main house which is occupied by your hosts, Rachel and her Patterdale Terrier, Treacle.

On sunny days, you are welcome to use the garden; I will happily put out the patio chairs and a small table when the weather is fine. Both the garden and parking are located at the bottom of the end of the house, which is a short distance away (past the front of main the house) from your front door.

I have an outdoor socket for charging electric cars and can make extra space for a second car if you need it for visitors.

Some of the sunsets here are spectacular and, since there are no street lights in Compton Martin, the night skies are relatively dark. The Milky Way is often visible and we're occasionally treated to shooting stars. You will, however, need a torch to find your way home from the pub on dark nights...

Other things to note
Doggy guests are welcome provided their owners are happy that the front door opens out onto The Coombe. It is a dead end, but traffic does pass the house to reach the dwellings further up the hill. I do specifically ask that they aren't allowed upstairs or on the furniture - the dogs, that is, not their owners.

The TV is downstairs in one corner of the kitchen and is therefore not in an easy spot for those who like lounging and watching at the same time.

The spiral staircase up to the bedroom isn't for everyone. I will trust your judgement and bookings are accepted on the basis that you've given this due consideration!

The log burner, spiral staircase and flagstone floors also mean that I'm not able to take bookings that include toddlers.

Neighbourhood highlights

Once two separate dwellings, Woodview is nestled into the slopes of the Mendip Hills in the historic village of Compton Martin. Quintessentially 'Somerset', the village has its own pond, church, busy pub, Post office and village hall.

Some suggest that the village could date back to Roman times, due to its proximity to Bath. We do know that the village appears on a Tudor Map of the area which may have been commissioned in order to settle a court dispute in London regarding grazing rights between Compton Martin and West Harptree. There's an ocre mine in the hillside just up from the cottage, which it is rumoured would have been used in the paints used by the chronicler who created the Tudor map.

We are within the Mendip Hills AONB with its rich and varied landscapes - from moorland to steep gorges and rich valleys, there's no wonder it's popular with those who love the outdoors.

This part of the West Country is extremely attractive for recreation, with plentiful walking, fishing, sailing, cylcing, eating out and city tours to make the most of your visit.

There are local stores where you can obtain essentials with a selection of shops and eateries in nearby Chew Magna, about four miles away and The Pig near Bath within easy striking distance by taxi.
