Escape to the English countryside at the Writer's Cottage, a charming three-bedroom retreat on the 22-acre Shore Hall estate. Swim in the heated outdoor pool, play tennis, wander beautiful gardens and woodland, and meet our horses and dogs. Perfect for families, friends and remote workers seeking peace and space, yet just over an hour from London and close to Cambridge, Saffron Walden and the picturesque village of Finchingfield.

The space
The Writer's Cottage is a beautifully appointed three-bedroom home designed for relaxed countryside living. Inside you'll find a comfortable sitting room, a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area, luxury bed linen, soft towels and fast gigabit fibre Wi-Fi.

Step outside and you'll discover 22 acres of gardens, orchards, woodland walks and wildflower meadows waiting to be explored. Children love spotting the horses and ponies, while adults enjoy the peaceful surroundings and slower pace of life.

Although wonderfully secluded, you're only minutes from Finchingfield, often described as England's most photographed village, 25 minutes from Saffron Walden, 45 minutes from Cambridge, and a 50-minute train ride from London.

Shore Hall is also home to two additional holiday residences, the North Wing and South Wing. We live on the estate ourselves and are always nearby if needed.

Guest access
Guests enjoy exclusive use of the entire Writer's Cottage.

You'll also have shared access to:

To ensure every guest enjoys peaceful use of the shared facilities, we allocate private two-hour sessions for the pool, tennis court and barbecue area. We recommend booking your preferred times at least 24 hours in advance.

Parking is available directly outside the cottage, and EV charging is available (£56 per day).

Other things to note
Shore Hall is a peaceful country estate, so we do not permit parties or events.

We welcome one friendly, well-behaved dog. Please note that our own dogs live on the estate and roam freely, so visiting dogs should be comfortable around other dogs and well-behaved around horses.

As this is a working country estate, you may see horses, sheep, wildlife, members of our family and our small estate team during your stay.

For families, our optional horsemanship experience is particularly popular. Children spend two hours with our experienced equestrian team helping care for our friendly horses and ponies, learning how life on the yard works and enjoying a memorable hands-on countryside experience.
