The space
GROUND FLOOR:
VESTIBULE:
You will enter via the large original double front door with Hand of Fatima knocker into the glass-paned vestibule where you may leave your shoes and coats if you wish.

DINING ROOM/LIVING ROOM:
Through the inner door you will find the dining and living room comprising wooden dining table with four chairs, two large armchairs, a fireplace with wood-burning stove, sideboard containing everything you will need for cooking and catering and a glass-fronted cupboard for your food storage.

Here you will also find the WiFi router, Alexa and a wall-mounted gun rack. The large window is south-facing and gives a pleasant view of the street. All windows have wooden shutters which keep the house cool in the summer.

There are doors to the side of this room leading into a second reception room which is being worked on currently; you are welcome to use it if you wish but we do not consider it to be part of the rented space.

KITCHEN:
At the far end of the living space, via two shallow steps, you will find the kitchen with large four-ring gas stove and oven, authentic sink and drainer, fridge freezer, microwave oven, coffee station, table and bins - one for recyclable and one for non-recyclable rubbish.

BATHROOM 1:
Double doors at the end of the living room, again via two shallow steps, lead you into the hallway and the first shower room is straight ahead of you. This comprises WC, electric walk-in shower and hand basin.

FIRST FLOOR:
BATHROOM 2:
From the hallway, a shallow staircase winds up towards the upper floors. On the half landing you will find the second shower room, comprising walk-in shower and hand basin.

The second door in this bathroom leads to the other half of the house, which is currently under renovation and does not make up part of the rented space.

BEDROOM 1:
Carry on up the stairs and to your right you will find the two bedrooms. The first one you come to is the larger, with a king-sized bed, bedside tables, lamps and rugs. It also has a large antique chest of drawers, standard fan and Ikea Poang armchair and footstool. From here you can relax and drink in the beautiful view of the village rooftops across to the hills beyond.

Enjoy the juxtaposition of the modern and antique furniture and the decor of the mid-20th century and beyond.

BEDROOM 2:
The second bedroom is slightly smaller, also with very interesting decor, marble fireplace, double bed, bedside tables, lamps and rugs. Here you will find your hanging space in a built-in wardrobe as well as a large antique mirrored wardrobe. This room is also furnished with armchair and side table.

Both bedrooms are very spacious and light due to large windows and being south-facing.

PATIO:
On the bedroom landing you will find a door leading to the upper floor. At the first door on your right, you will come to an anteroom which leads to your outdoor space. This is a long narrow cool space with two chairs and coffee table. Smoking is permitted in this area.

WC:
Before you reach the patio, a doorway on your right leads to what will become the third bedroom with en suite shower room. At the moment, it is a work in progress but already houses your second toilet and another wash handbasin.

Neighbourhood highlights

Escales village is small, peaceful and authentically French with a population of 480 (according to the latest government figures - January 2024). It is situated in the “département” of Aude, one of the more sparsely populated areas of France, with only 376,000 inhabitants total.

Nestled among the vineyards and halfway between Carcassonne and Narbonne, Escales has many narrow crooked streets to explore with beautiful old buildings including the Romanesque church.

The social central part of the village (90m) houses the Mairie, well-stocked and friendly épicerie, café, post office, church, village square and wine-making artefacts.

Within five minutes' walk you can be out in the countryside wandering alongside the vineyards and climbing La Garrigue up to the Tour d'Escales (900m) and enjoying beautiful views of the surrounding area right across to the Black Mountain in the Natural Regional Haut-Languedoc Park.

Beautiful long sandy beaches, eg Gruissan with its famous Plage des Chalets and Narbonne Plage, are 46 km away and there are several public swimming pools in the vicinity, eg Gruissan (45 km), Carcassonne (37 km) and Peyriac-Minervois (14 km). There are also numerous spots for bathing along the River Aude.

My work: Property Manager
I spend the majority of my time with my partner Paul in a small French village halfway between Narbonne and Carcassonne and we also maintain homes in Bristol, England and Entre Naranjas, near Orihuela in Spain. I manage the properties we have on Airbnb and am also a house sitter. I am the mother of three grown-up children; I love being by the sea, baking, yoga, qi gong and my beautiful cat, amongst many other things.
