Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
Only a short hop from London, yet surrounded by beautiful and seemingly endless countryside, Tonwell Tower is a spectacular getaway any time of year.

The newly converted 1964 Brutalist water tower is six stories, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and eight friends & family of magic.

Cosy nights, romantic dinners, walks, cycling, fresh air and some super pubs, historic houses, golf, museums, fishing, spas, zorbing & more.

Come. It is beautiful, thrilling, peaceful and stunning - all at once.

The space
The tower is our family weekend home and is filled with our love and personality. We offer it occasionally for rental if we are away. It will be cleared of all our personal possessions for your stay and will be yours in its entirety.

At 75' (23m) tall, the tower has commanding views over the Hertfordshire countryside that extend over 40 miles into the City of London. It sits on the edge of a tiny village, amongst a network of idyllic walks, bike rides and country pubs. Hatfield House, Knebworth, The Henry Moore museum, Hertfordshire Zoo, Harry Potter Studios and so much more - not to mention the metropolis of London - are all within 20 mins to an hour's travel. See our AirBnB guide in the 'Location' section for details.

Originally designed by Edmund Percey of Scherrer and Hicks architects for the local municipality, Tonwell Tower was built in 1964 to supply water to the surrounding farms and villages. It was retired in the mid noughties, and purchased by us in 2020.

Over four years, we designed, restored and recreated it as a private home for time with friends. We specified, engineered, constructed, built, finished and fitted it with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a large living space, office and utilities, with our own love of mid century style. Original period Danish and British furniture sits alongside 21st century tech: Kofod Larsen, Dyrland and Poole Pottery; triple glazing, Daikin heat pumps and MVHR, underfloor heating; smart lights, smart blinds, smart appliances and smart climate control; Roca bathrooms, Bora appliances, Quooker tap, Blanco waste disposal; and a 'weapons grade' fire system.

It can accommodate up to eight people in four bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms - each bedroom can be a double or a twin. The 600 sqf (60sqm) top floor, with captivating views through the expansive floor to ceiling windows, is a full kitchen, dining and living space. The lower floors also feature a small home office, library and laundry room. And then there's the roof terrace (and hot tub - see note below)...

Guest access
The tower is available to our guests exclusively and in its entirety.

Very sadly, our Accessibility is not good - it's awful. Sorry. We've had to work with what we were given, and there is no room for a lift and little room for a wheelchair. There are over 100 steps to the roof.

Other things to note
A 8’ diameter, eight person, roof-top hot-tub may be available during your stay. Please enquire for more information.

We're a family of four. Three ladies and me. The wonderful beautiful Alison and our delightful girls. We're easy going, fun-loving, fairly gregarious and thoroughly enjoy company. Hosting through AirBnB has proved a delight. The girls get to share their home made jam and cookies, sometimes I bake, and we all get to meet wonderful people with every stay.
