Trails, Hikes, fishing, petroglyphs, rafting

Rio Grande del Norte National Monument has numerous trails with extraordinary vistas combining canyon, mesas and mountain peaks. The occasional passing of a Rocky Mountain big horn sheep makes this all the more memorable. Big horn sheep used to be more numerous than deer in the west but now there numbers are few due to illness acquired from European introduced domestic sheep. If you are into rafting the Rio Grande, launching sites are nearby. Petroglyphs tell a story of the first encounter of the horse to the Comanche which later resulted in their control of large portions of the western US for a period of time
