Your guide to Skegness

All About Skegness

Skegness is a quintessential British seaside resort in the county of Lincolnshire on the east coast of England. People flock to the vast expanse of golden sand on its Blue Flag beach along the North Sea. The historic pier stands on the front and overlooks a modern addition to the coast, the dramatic white turbines of the Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farms.

The area next to the beach is bursting with entertainment, and the Skegness Pleasure Beach is at its heart. Here, you will find everything from golf, ten-pin bowling alleys, and amusement arcades to a boating lake and swimming pool. Compass Garden provides a relaxing green oasis and features the mascot of Skegness — the statue of the Jolly Fisherman. Brightly coloured ice cream parlours are dotted throughout the town, with many fish and chips restaurants to tempt you. The red-brick clock tower from 1898 marks the start of the Grand Parade, home to the Embassy Theatre.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Skegness

As a seaside destination, Skegness comes to life during the summer months, particularly during the school holidays in England from the end of July to the beginning of September. Temperatures are generally at their warmest during this time, with long daylight hours. The town organises many activities in the peak season, including the Skegness Carnival in the middle of August, which features a Carnival Parade through the streets. August is also when they switch on the Skegness Illuminations, which remain in place until the end of October.

Although the number of visitors falls after the end of the school holidays and some attractions close for winter, the town holds several different events throughout the rest of the year, including the Skegness Beach Race, featuring various races over two days at the beginning of November. A Christmas market is also held a few weeks before the holiday.

Top things to do in Skegness

Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve

Less than five kilometres south of Skegness, you’ll find the 445-hectare Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, boasting a pristine coastline, freshwater marshes, and sand dunes. It features a brand new nature centre and visitor centre, you can watch for a variety of birds, depending on the season, from skylarks in the spring to hen harriers in the winter.

Victorian Pier

The Victorian Pier opened in 1881, and it’s a reminder of when Skegness became a popular seaside resort. The approach takes you through a modern centre with a range of facilities, from ten-pin bowling to climbing, before emerging onto the historic pier. Its appearance has changed over the years — the theatre once at the end has long since gone. But ambling the English pier will transport you back in time as you look towards the North Sea.

Bolingbroke Castle

Around a 30-minute drive west of Skegness are the ruins of Bolingbroke Castle. The birthplace of King Henry IV, the castle dates back to the early 13th century and is an example of a hexagonal enclosure castle. Although it was destroyed during the English Civil War in the 17th century, you can wander across the earthworks, cross the moat, and check out the ruins, now surrounded by grass.
