Your guide to Glynsk

All About Glinsk

Glinsk, a small corner of County Galway, sits near the border with County Roscommon, around an hour from the shore of sprawling Lough Ree. It isn’t just a picturesque destination in itself — Glinsk is one of the ten villages that make up the popular walk known as the Suck Valley Way. This epic 100-kilometre trail tracks through lowland farms and crosses the boglands and callows of the River Suck, passing lakes and drainage channels and offering sweeping views of the Irish countryside.

Glinsk itself offers a quiet rural setting that is virtually untouched, nestled in miles of farmland and patches of ancient bog. The village’s major landmark is Glinsk Castle, thought to be the last castle built in Ireland in the mid-17th century. It was gutted by a fire not long after, and today its ruins stand as a prominent example of the architectural style of the Norman era, featuring tall chimney stacks and square towers. You can also explore the remains of the nearby Ballinakill Abbey, the earliest Gothic church in Ireland, as well as the charming towns in the surrounding countryside.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Glynsk

Glinsk has a mostly mild and changeable climate all year round, with extreme temperatures being rare. The long warm days in June and July are perfect to enjoy the coastal walks surrounding the village. From March to May and September to October, the weather does cool down, but you can still expect mild days, and in spring you’ll be treated to a kaleidoscope of wildflowers blooming in the surrounding countryside. In April, the annual Traditional Music Festival takes place in nearby Clifden, offering a free weekend of music, song, and dance. In winter, you can expect colder temperatures and the likelihood of rain, but this part of Ireland normally enjoys milder winters than most. Whenever you decide to visit, you’ll find a range of cottages to choose from for your stay in Glinsk.

Top things to do in Glynsk

Connemara National Park

Just over 45 minutes’ drive away is Connemara National Park, whose rolling peaks and undulating valleys offer mile after mile of views. Choose one of the many hiking trails which may take you through mountains, bogs, forests, or grasslands. There are many resident wild animals to spot, including Connemara ponies and red deer. After your hike, restore your spirits at the park’s tea room.

Kylemore Abbey

The imposing Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, one of the grandest buildings in Ireland, is only a 30-minute drive from Glinsk. Sitting right at the edge of Pollacapall Lough, its slim turrets and granite walls look like they’re straight out of a fairytale. Built in 1867 as a castle, the abbey is now home to a Benedictine monastery and is surrounded by 13,000 acres of manicured gardens, walks, and woodlands.

Sky Road

Just 30 minutes from Glinsk is the beginning of the famous Sky Road — a 20-kilometre scenic drive that loops around the town of Clifden. The circular road is regarded as one of Ireland’s best drives, offering commanding views of jagged cliffs, lush mountains, and the rolling Connemara coastline. Once you’re done, have a wander along the magenta-and-sunflower-yellow shopfronts on Clifden’s Main Street and enjoy lunch in one of its many restaurants.
