Welcome to Gallops Cottage, a lovingly restored 16th-century farmhouse nestled between rolling countryside and ancient woodland. Just 20 minutes from Brighton and Lewes, and moments from the South Downs Way, this enchanting retreat offers the perfect balance of history, nature, and modern convenience. Whether you’re planning a family holiday, a getaway with friends, or a quiet escape, Gallops Cottage promises memories that last a lifetime.
The space
Once an open-hall house dating back to the late 1500s, Gallops Cottage brims with character. Think exposed beams, wattle-and-daub walls, low ceilings, and centuries-old charm, paired seamlessly with everything you need for a relaxing stay.
KITCHEN / DINING AREA
This home offers spacious areas, a fully equipped KITCHEN with modern amenities including induction hob, oven, kettle, toaster, bean to cup coffee machine and microwave, plus plenty of cookware, glassware, crockery and cutlery so you can easily cook up a family meal for everybody with fresh local produce. In addition to this, we offer complimentary tea and coffee, salt and pepper - so please help yourself.
Enjoy every meal in the beautiful, light-filled DINING ROOM where wraparound windows frame sweeping views of the gardens and rolling fields beyond. With a large table that comfortably seats eight, this space is perfect for leisurely family breakfasts bathed in morning sunshine, long afternoon lunches with friends, or relaxed evening dinners that stretch late into the night as conversation and laughter flow.
LIVING AREA
A cosy snug, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploring, where soft lighting, comfortable seating, and historic charm create the perfect setting for reading a book, sipping a glass of wine, or simply enjoying a quiet evening in complete relaxation.
A bright, dual-aspect living room filled with natural light, designed for gathering together. With generous seating and a TV, it’s the perfect space for family movie nights, board games, or lively conversations that bring everyone closer. Please note that the log burner is not functional and use of it is not permitted
SLEEPING AREA
We provide plenty of fresh bed linen for all FOUR BEDROOMS:
Bedroom 1, King bed, Zip & Link beds that can be put split as Twins on request within 7 days from check-in (on the first floor)
Bedroom 2, Double bed (on the first floor)
Bedroom 3, Twin beds, Zip & Link beds that can be put together as King on request within 7 days from check-in (on the first floor)
Study room, A quiet room with sofa bed (for two extra guests), perfect for reading, working, or simply unwinding (on the ground floor)
BATHROOMS
Bathroom 1, Family bathroom with walk-in shower located on the first floor
Bathroom 2, With shower, bath, WC & washing machine for your longer stay.
OUTSIDE AREA
Step through the doors and into the countryside. There is a small fire pit onsite which can be nice to sit around in the summer evenings (Please don't light too close to the house and please clear up afterwards). Gallops Cottage is surrounded by acres of meadowland and backs onto Blackbrook Wood, famed for its spring bluebells. Enjoy:
- Private gardens with seating & BBQ area
- A children’s play area with football goal
- Secure bike storage
- Plenty of space to roam, relax, and reconnect with nature
The Gallops Cottage is a rare chance to stay in a piece of history without giving up modern comfort and it comes with quirks (original steep staircases, low ceilings, and uneven floors) perfect for families, walkers, cyclists, and history lovers alike but probably not suitable for guests with mobility needs
Other things to note
- Travel cots and highchairs available on request for a small additional fee.
- Babysitting and family camping on the grounds can be arranged, just ask.
- To preserve the charm and integrity of this historic cottage, we aren’t able to accommodate pets. But don’t worry — we also manage a selection of countryside homes where your four-legged friends are warmly welcomed. Just reach out, and we’ll be delighted to point you toward the perfect pet-friendly stay.
- Please note there are no fires allowed inside the cottage. The internal log burners are not operational.
