The space
The Hide at Haws Hill is situated on a private access tarmac track, which is also a bridle path. It is a stunning peaceful location surrounded by fields and oak trees , a tiny space only 40 ft x 8ft, custom built, for an off grid experience to enjoy a luxury , peaceful stay for a wellness break to enjoy the countryside, nature and tranquility.
The Hide is surrounded by farm land so farmers may be out in the fields in the summer when they are hay making and harvesting , you may be interrupted by the humm of a combine harvester in the summer.
Plenty of outdoor space for those who practice yoga and meditation. Yoga mats provided.
The lodge is totally off grid, supported by solar panels , while this provides plenty of power, from December to March it is possible we may not have sufficient light to power up the batteries. We do have a back up generator that we can run in daylight hours for a short amount of time, to top up the power, but it is possible the batteries may deplete and you could possibly be reliant on the wood burning stove and gas hob. If the batteries are looking low we will let you know in advance of your stay so you can choose if you wish to change your booking dates at that time of year.
The cooking facilities comprise a 4 ring gas hob suitable for boiling the kettle and and egg! an outside BBQ , and central heating powered by the solar which heats the water.
Outside is laid to a patio area and an outside bath, and half an acre of herbal leys wildflower meadow for you to make use of for your own private use, or share at times with sheep.
A king size bed with the most spectacular view over the fields and oak trees.
The location offers countryside at its best with owls, hares, beautiful ancient oak trees and hopefully the wild flower meadow and herbal leys in front of the lodge will establish soon.
The Hide is literally accessed via a public bridlepath and is on a network of footpaths which are fabulous for walking and exploring.
We have installed a traffic mirror on the path so that when you exit the property in a vehicle please do check that nothing 2 or 4 legged or a tractor is coming up or down the track before pulling out.
The Hide has also been designed to consider those with reduced mobility as much as possible in this small space, with a level patio area and an access ramp with a 1 in 20 gradient,1100 mm wide to facilitate access from the parking immediately next to the ramp, the front door access is 980mm wide and the tri fold doors open wider.
The access to the wet room is via a sliding door (800mm w), the floor is a non slip wet room, dimensions 2120mm x 1750mm. The shower wet room access is 780mm. The shower room has a built in shower seat.
It is not suitable for children, the facility is on a farm , with farm machinery in the vicinity, and during harvest and hay making season there are tractors working in the fields next door.
We try to be as eco friendly as possible , our hedges are mulched with our own sheep fleeces, the property is off grid and self powered, our timber for the fire pit is from our fallen timber on the farm or any trees that have experienced ash die back. Our laundry is line dried and not ironed , so you may see creases or sun bleach . The container is recycled and did a one way trip from China, and all of the furniture upcycled as much as possible!
Please do note that we live in a rural area and from the end of October to the end of January there are local farm shoots taking place nearby so it’s quite normal to hear the pop pop of gun fire and see people with their dogs out walking nearby, all very friendly.
The lane to The Hide is single track and we do have houses on the road to The Hide, so please be considerate when driving along the lane and drive slowly past the neighbouring farm and cottage , and stop for anyone walking or with dogs and horses. For this reason we invite guests with one vehicle only.
Please note this is an off grid facility..it is not a 5 star hotel, nor is it a fully furnished conventional house. For an off grid facility it has most things needed to survive in relative luxury but you will not be able to cook a roast lunch with all the trimmings! It is warm with gas central heating, has the facilities too cook , shower and bathe outside and a big comfy king size bed…oh and a tv, fridge and woodburner!
Housekeeping will clean the outside bath on the morning of your arrival however especially in the winter, you may well find leaves and bugs in the bath by the afternoon !
We operate a strictly no pet policy as we are on a livestock farm, and it’s not somewhere for a party. We can not afford to upset our neighbours and any guests who disrespect our policy will be asked to leave .
Guest access
All of the space along with half an acre of wildflower meadow is for your private use, the nearest neighbour is 250m away.
There is parking for one vehicle, two on request.
Other things to note
It is a small space and best described as luxury glamping.
It is not suitable for children.
It is a rural location , plenty of tractors and farm vehicles round and about, combine harvesters in August and September in the fields next door, and from late October to late January you will probably hear the pop pop sounds of gun fire on local farm shoots.
It is off grid so power useage is not that of a normal house but it’s pretty good! The listing description caveats December to March when the light is poor in terms of charging the batteries from the solar.
We have vodaphone Wi-Fi provided , and good mobile reception.
The access into the cabin is over 32 inches and can facilitate wheelchairs , along with the 1/20 ramp gradient. The wet room is suitable for those with restricted mobility in the sense it can facilitate a zimmer. The access to the shower cubicle is only 31 inches, and there is a built in ledge seat under the shower , for those with restricted mobility it’s better than most we have used. There are no hoists or grab rails. No oven! Yoga mats on site.
We do remove the outside wooden chairs and hammock from December to March to prevent weathering.
If the natural day light is not generating full solar power we will turn the fridge off to conserve battery power and provide a cool bag with ice blocks during your stay, particularly between December -March.
If the weather is really awful and the solar batteries are not charging sufficiently in our opinion for you to have a warm and comfortable stay , we will let you know the day before or as soon as it becomes apparent it will be a problem, we don’t want unhappy guests, and give you the opportunity to change the dates of your stay. You will of course have the opportunity to disregard our advice and “camp” without power and hot water! To date we have only had such an instance on the shortest day of the year and a miserable week in grey February to put it into perspective,
