Your guide to Sale
All About Sale
Once a small but thriving marketplace on the northern edge of Cheshire, the historic town of Sale has become a popular commuter area and is now a suburb of Trafford in Greater Manchester. Located on the south bank of the River Mersey, Sale was once home to prehistoric humans, evidenced by a flint arrowhead discovered in a local garden in 1894. Today the town ranks as one of the top places to live in the United Kingdom thanks to its arts scene, transport links, and natural areas. One popular green space is Sale Water Park, a 152-acre parkland offering multi-use trails and a large artificial lake where you can kayak, paddleboard, windsurf, and sail.
Sale is well situated for exploring the northwest, and you’ll find plenty of activities and attractions in town, including the Waterside arts centre next to the Bridgewater Canal. An emerging foodie scene features several new independent eateries making a splash, while there is a lively shopping area with a mix of big-name stores and local boutiques. The town is also conveniently located for the sights and shopping of Manchester city centre, just a 20-minute tram ride away.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Sale
The climate in Sale is typical for the northwest of England, with cool summers, mild winters, and regular rainfall throughout the year. To make the most of warmer, drier weather, book your holiday cottage in Sale for the summer months between June and August. June is when the Sale Festival usually takes place — a month-long celebration of the local community, with events to engage all ages. If you visit in early July, you can take in the Arts Trail, where businesses come alive with all manner of crafts and creations from local artists, including textiles, photography, illustrations, and jewellery.
Top things to do in Sale
Bridgewater Canal
You can explore this historical waterway with a gentle stroll, cycle, or a trip on a narrowboat. There are more than 39 miles of canal in total, of which 2.5 are in the town itself. Bridgewater is often cited as the first true man-made canal in England.
Walkden Gardens
This lush community space has beautifully designed gardens, wisteria arches, a labyrinth, and a mini arboretum that’s an excellent place for a picnic. A 19th-century dovecote sits on the grounds, a historic focal and meeting point. Musical and theatrical events take place on the Theatre Lawn, including seasonal Sunset Cinema sessions, streaming classic films in the open air.
Waterside Arts Centre
Overlooking the Bridgewater Canal, the Waterside Arts Centre is a hub of creative activities in the town. Art exhibitions, musical concerts, stand-up comedy, talks, and family events are regularly on the agenda. Even if you’re not watching a performance here, the bar and coffee house are pleasant waterfront spots to chill out.
