Situated on the northern coast of Norfolk, the village of Thornham is known for its traditional cottages, marsh landscapes, secluded beaches, and ample bird watching opportunities. The pace of life in this tiny seaside town is more placid than bustling, and a stroll through the village centre will quickly familiarize you with its pubs, businesses, and markets offering freshly caught shellfish, mackerel, and tuna.

The short walk from the village to the coastline leads you past scenic salt marshlands and, in spring, a colourful array of wildflowers. High tide brings a spectacular show of wildfowl, bar-tailed godwits, and other waders. The village’s once-prosperous harbour is now considered one of Norfolk’s most remote beaches with soft, white sand and few crowds. The calm waters here are ideal for swimming and fishing. Thornham has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters. While not typically an area that sees a lot of snow, if you plan to explore the outdoors during winter, make sure you come prepared for light snow with warm, waterproof clothes and boots. Spring is an excellent time for wildlife spotting, especially as the weather warms up, but beware of the season’s high tides — many cars parked too close to the shoreline have gotten stuck in the rising water.

Summer is generally a lovely time to consider staying in one of the Thornham holiday cottages due to the region’s warm, pleasant temperatures. The mild year-round weather allows for festivals and events throughout the year — including the Norfolk Coast Dark Skies Festival, an autumn event centred around astronomy and wildlife, and the Norfolk County Music Festival, a spring musical event featuring local musicians.

RSPB Titchwell Marsh

Located between Thornham and the neighbouring village of Titchwell, the RSPB Titchwell Marsh is one of the area’s best wildlife viewing sites. Not only is the marsh home to native birds like geese and avocets, the plethora of migrant birds that make their way to the bogs add to the birdwatching spectacle. Short trails wind through the marshlands, and picnic tables and benches provide a place to rest and enjoy the nature surrounding you.

Lynn Museum

The Lynn Museum, which is located 35 minutes from Thornham in the town of King’s Lynn, focuses on King’s Lynn and Norfolk history. Its collection of medieval objects and exhibits include the famous Seahenge, a timber circle dating back to the Bronze Age.

Houghton Hall and Gardens

Located a half hour away from Thornham, the Houghton Hall and Gardens — a mansion built for Britain’s first prime minister — is now home to the Soldier Museum, which displays one of the world’s largest collections of model soldiers. The walled gardens surrounding Houghton Hall feature an assortment of sculptures and groomed flowerbeds.
