Willow Tree Farm & orchard

PaulRating, 5 stars1 week ago
This is a really beautiful house which is really spacious. The kitchen/diner/lounge provides a really comfortable social space where the whole family can come together. The bedrooms are very spacious, and also beautifully furnished. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. We had games in the large enclosed garden which was safe for the dogs and our little people! The only slight issue we had is that the sofa bed is in the kitchen/lounge area which was not practical for our grandaughter. Otherwise, there is nothing at all we could fault. Ali, the host was really helpful, always responsive with any queries that we had.

Large family, wheelchair friendly with a hot tub

CarolineRating, 5 stars1 month ago
We stayed here for a family get together, there was 16 of us, but it felt like there was plenty of space and lots to do in the house. The kitchen was very well equipped, the beds were comfy and the hot tub was lovely after a day of walking. Highly recommend!

Great Kettle Barn - Dog friendly cottage for 2.

VickyRating, 5 stars2 days ago
We wanted a relaxing break with nice scenery for a couple of days and were certainly not disappointed! This is a beautiful cottage in a stunning location! A picturesque little village in the middle of nowhere so a car is definitely a necessity. We wanted to be close enough to the Lake District for day trips, but far enough away so avoid the crowds. The cottage itself was immaculately presented with everything you need and more. We especially enjoyed the log burner in the evenings. Even though it’s directly joined to the main house it still felt private. Sue and Fitz were excellent hosts, very friendly, helpful and approachable. We would recommend this cottage and hosts to anyone and will definitely be staying here again when we want to revisit the Lake District!

Complete house pets welcome sleeps 4

NicolaRating, 5 stars4 days ago
A lovely clean little house, in a quiet area. Everything we needed for our stay! Not far from the beach and a lovely nature reserve. Great place to stay if you like walking, or have dogs with you, lots of lovely walks. Ellen was very polite and friendly, and made sure the lights and heating were on for our late arrival, and a fresh pint of milk. Always handy, in case forgotten to grab some, as I normally do! Will definitely return.

Beautiful property - very spacious but homely and cosy. Great host who provided lots of local recommendations in advance. Proactively communicated clear instructions for accessing the property and asked if we needed travel cot. Very close to Helmsley which has lots of lovely coffee shops and cafes and great farm shop with cafe (Beadlam Grange).

Your guide to Durham

All About Durham

With winding cobblestone streets overlooked by a dramatic cathedral and castle — both UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Durham is one of the most historically significant cities in the United Kingdom, just 30 minutes south of Newcastle. When you arrive in the city, your gaze will instantly be drawn to Durham Cathedral, which was built in the 11th century and is one of the finest Norman structures in Europe. You can climb the tower for spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. The castle — also built in the 11th century — is the only Norman castle in the United Kingdom to have never been breached. Today it is part of a prestigious university, and you can enjoy a guided walking tour through its grounds.

The entire town centre of Durham is a designated conservation area, with almost 600 listed buildings of importance. Intertwined with all that history is a thriving cultural scene. Durham is full of interesting shops selling antiques, secondhand books, and arts and crafts. There are also many traditional English pubs here and cafes serving afternoon tea.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Durham

The most pleasant time to stay in one of Durham’s many cottages and holiday apartments is between late March and June, when the days are generally mild. In June, the second-oldest regatta in Britain takes place on the River Wear. Alongside the boat racing, the city comes alive with music, food, and entertainment for all ages. July and August are the warmest months, and you can expect sunny days to explore the city and beyond. Be aware that the weather can be changeable, though, so pack a jacket along with your sunscreen.

The Lumiere light festival is a popular four-day event in November, with a series of illuminated artworks lighting up city streets and buildings at night. If you visit in winter you’ll be greeted with colder temperatures and the likelihood of rain, so make sure you come prepared with plenty of layers.

Top things to do in Durham

Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral’s nave is believed to be the world’s first structural pointed arch, and the Romanesque architecture is among the finest you’ll see anywhere in the country. Climb the steps to the tower, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the countryside, and explore the Open Treasure exhibition, which will give you an insight into the cathedral’s long history.

Durham Market Hall

The beautiful Market Hall offers excellent shopping in the heart of the town centre. Inside the historic building, you’ll find more than 40 independent traders selling fresh produce, cheese and wine, fashion and beauty products, secondhand books and musical instruments, arts and crafts, and homewares. The market is also home to many events, including a monthly Street Food event, and every Saturday there’s an outdoor market with crafts, food, and vintage clothing.

River Wear

Enjoy an afternoon stroll on one of the many walking trails along the picturesque River Wear. Cross Prebends Bridge and walk west of the riverbank towards town for the best views of the castle and cathedral, or cross Framwellgate Bridge or Milburngate Bridge and make a full loop of the town centre. Pick up a free Durham City Map in the town square that highlights all the river walking paths.
